E is for Exercise

R.a.n.t. of day 04/06/15
Back when I was married, I shockingly weighed over 22 stone (over 300 pounds). Though I have to admit I couldn't blame anyone else, the ex-wife's weekly shopping list consisted of Oreo's, Cookies N Cream Ice Cream, Doritoes, Sugar Cookies, Soda, Cereal, Taco Dip, and.... well, think of any other junk food, it was probably on the list at some point. So I've cut out eating junk food and fast food, but I was still having problems losing weight.

This is where exercise comes in. One of the best ways I've found to lose weight, besides not eating tubs of ice cream, is running. It's a tiring bit of exercise, but I don't mind doing it. It's a necessary evil you understand. One perk, I get a lot of thinking done. (Working on ideas for my stories). So when I go to the gym, I've started running 5K's. To be fair, I only run half of it. I split my time between running and walking. So far I've lost three stone (42 pounds), so it's working. The funny thing, when I tell people what I've been doing to lose weight, they agree with everything till I mention the exercise part. "I couldn't never do that" and "I hate to exercise" are a few of the replies. But if you think about it, does anyone really like to exercise? Who, if given the choice between grunting, groaning and sweating in the gym or relaxing on the beach with a Mai Tai, wouldn't choose the one where alcoholic drinks were involved?

So, am I excited when I get to go to the gym and run for an hour? I'd be lying if I said yes. But when I step on that scale and see I've lost another two pounds for the week, I DO get excited. Time to celebrate with a Mai Tai!

Some Questions for Discussion:
What's your favourite exercise?
What's your favourite comfort food?
What's your favourite drink? (Alcoholic or not).

  1. Hi,
I love to run but must admit I haven't run in about three years. But, I want to start walking because I do want to lose about 10 pounds.
    I enjoyed reading your article.

    1. Before I gained all my weight during my marriage, I used to run also. When I got bigger, I stopped. Now that I'm back in the habit I feel so much better.
Remember, it all starts with a single step. When I started doing my 5K's I walked the entire time Before too long, I may be running them all. You can do it!

  2. I have a slight heart problem, so I have to take it easy when I exercise. My favorite form is walking, but I do like to do a little kicking boxing when I can.

    1. Yes, a simple but brisk walk can do wonders for your health. As long as you keep your stress under control. Because anything is better than sitting inside watching Gillagin's Island reruns.

  3. Good for you! I like seeing the scale go down, too. Maybe I should try running for an hour...

    1. If you can't run for an hour, run for 30 minutes. If not 30, run for 15. Whatever you can do. Give it time, and you'll be running 5K in no time. Personally, I'm still working on it. I'll get there one day.

  4. Good for you! I'm making half-hearted attempts at beginning my walk program again. I signed up for a couple of charity walks to get myself motivated.

I actually prefer exerplay to exercise, though. If I can make it feel like play, I'm more likely to do it.

    1. You know what they say. When you enjoy what you are doing, it's not work. Same for exercise. If it's fun, it's a lot easier to do.

  5. People don't like exercise, they like what it does for them! Health is the same as everything else good in life. You have to work for it. :)

    1. So, so true Rachel. And exercise is two-fold. It makes you look and feel better.

  6. Hello there.
I never liked exercise, except swimming, which I refuse to do now since pools are like public toilets! Last time I tried to run someplace, I ruptured my achilles tendon landing me in hospital and twelve stitches. You're not alone in eating the tubs of ice cream...vanilla is my favourite. When I feel like I've had one too many tubs, which still happens every now and then, I'll put on one of my walking exercise dvds and "Walk Away The Pounds" or commit myself to hubby's Total Gym and work up a sweat or two that way.
