Welcome to the J.A.Scott blog. We'll get to our r.a.n.t. for the day, but first a word from our sponsor.
Has this ever happened to you? You are running late for the office when suddenly you remember you forgot to cut your banana slices for the day. So now, instead of running to Starbucks for that much needed coffee, you are spending time cutting up your banana. How annoying. Don't you wish this wasn't a problem? Well now you don't have to! With the new banana slicer, you can slice a banana in 2 seconds flat! Order now and we'll throw in this free bunch of bananas. Act now! Supplies are running low. Get yours today!

R.a.n.t. for day of 04/29/15
I think it is safe to say we've all had the experience of trying to watch a youtube video only to get the 'You can skip this ad in five seconds', message. Now, I won't lie, there have been a few times I've actually watched the entire commercial. Usually it's a trailer or a funny ad. But then the ad is displayed again for the next video. Again, another ad comes up. A continual process, ad nauseam.

True, I understand the need to advertise and make money. But that doesn't mean I have to like it, or be happy that I'm getting these annoying pop-ups, displays and banners. Watching the new Star Wars trailer is great. But watching the new Star Wars trailer 15 times in one morning? Not so great. Now you'll have to excuse me. I have my morning banana to slice.

Questions for discussion:
What's the most ridiculous item you've ever seen advertised?
How many Youtube ads do you watch in a single week?
Is there a favourite commercial you actually like to watch?

  1. I hate those Youtube ads! I go there to watch what I wanted to watch, not to grind my teeth and wait 5 seconds so I can click "skip." But hey, I do like that banana cutter. :)

    1. Who has ever said, "Skip? No, I'll watch the entire boring one minute commercial."

  2. Those are annoying. Even worse when you can't skip the ads.
The best commercials out there are for ESPN. They are a riot.

    1. Yes, the funny ones I may watch. Just not 25 times in a row.

  3. I love the slicer. Wonder if you can use it for hot dogs? I like beanie-weanies! I hate the commercials you can' skip.

    1. Maybe you could buy a banana slicer and a hot dog slicer. :)
      Thanks for stopping by.

  4. I have to say, the only commercials I watch, and actually seek out are the ones Budweiser plays during the Super Bowl. IMO, they ROCK! But only those... Lisa, co-host AtoZ 2015, @ http://www.lisabuiecollard.com

    1. I would say about 50% of the Super Bowl commercials are ones I enjoy. However, they have gotten worse and not as funny in recent years.

  5. I don't think anyone has ever said "You know, I think we need more advertisements. Let's see how long we can make the user wait by inserting as many ads as possible" To add insult to injury, Youtube has changed it's app on Xbox.. and even though it shows a notification to skip ad, when you click on it, it just pauses the play.

  6. I have a funny one for your YouTube commentary. I have a peaceful beach sounds video I watch on YouTube when I'm really trying to concentrate and it's noisy all around. I got it all fired up this morning and was enjoying the peaceful sounds of the beach when all of a sudden, 4 minutes in, an annoying ad kicked in. It totally disrupted the work I was doing and I was thinking, "Really? 4 minutes in and I get an ad?" It made me wonder if I'd have to deal with an add every 4 minutes! I didn't...

    1. Now they are sporadic advertising? What next? Take me back to the days when the most annoying thing about youtube was getting Rick-Rolled.

  7. Hey Jeffrey, you are totally excused to slice your bannana. No gain without pain!

  8. I hear ya. I usually go for VideoTube (an app on my ipad) and it definitely has fewer ads, but they're still there. I'm always annoyed. Like Lisa, the only commercials I look forward happen during the Super Bowl, though admittedly this past year I was a bit disappointed with their quality. :/

  9. First of all- who slices bananas? My kids are all grown- so we eat them whole!!!!
And, secondly, Google wants to make money form everything- so, of course, You Tube has ads.

    1. NO idea who the banana slicer is really for. Seems even a bit ridiculous for even little kids. How long does it take to slice a banana?

  10. Hello there.
YouTube ads are a real pain. Some of them are 28 seconds long, which you have to watch since you can't bypass it to get to what you really want to watch. The only time I slice bananas is when I put them in my cereal and when I make banana bread - then I only slice them to make mashing them easier.

    1. Some of the youtube ads are bad when they decide they want to advertise a film I don't even want to see the commercial off. That gets annoying.
