Battle of the Bands - Doctor My Eyes

I think by now, everyone has learned I've not been feeling too well. So I decided to find a song theme to fit that. No worries, this is where the topic of my health begins and ends. It's time to celebrate music, and that's what I plan to do. I love much of Jackson Browne's music, that when I thought of this song, I thought it would be a great fit.

However, as you might imagine, it would be somewhat unfair to pit Jackson Browne against a cover artist. So I have found two cover artists to compete for your votes. The first artist is named Wilson, as is the second artist. That is, Wilson Phillips is competing against Gretchen Wilson. That's right. It's a battle of the Wilson's.

For reference only: Jackson Browne: Doctor My Eyes

BATTLE OF THE BANDS

The two musical contenders for this Battle of the Bands are below.
Please listen to both and tell me which you like best.

Wilson Phillips

Gretchen Wilson

Those are the two contenders. Ignoring the actual videos, who do you think performs the song best? I collected the two bands to battle it out, now it's your job to vote on your favourite. Please list your preferred song choice in the comments. Additionally, let me know why you feel the way you do. Voting ends on the 22nd when I'll cast my vote and announce the winner in a separate posting.

Additional Questions:
What was the name of Dennis the Menace's grumpy neighbour?
Who is your favourite fictional doctor?
Do you have a favourite Jackson Browne song?

  1. Hi, Jeffrey; I hope you're feeling a little bit better.

Gretchen Wilson's twang didn't sound pleasing to my ears, so my vote goes to the harmonies of Wilson Phillips.

Dennis' neighbour was Mr. Wilson but was a first name ever mentioned? Favourite fictional doctor is Doctor No. Favourite Jackson Brown song is Stay

    2. Yay to feeling better! You sure had a rough time for awhile there. I love trivia. ☺

  2. Wilson Phillips' version was easier on my ears.
Favorite doctor Dr. Beverly Crusher from Next Gen or the Doctor from Voyager, both Star Trek characters.

    1. If I had to choose between your two doctors, I'd go with Beverly Crusher.

  3. Hi, Jeffrey!

Music is an effective tonic and I hope listening to the cool tuneage on the BOTB circuit today enables you to feel better.

The battle you presented this round is a great one and I am torn. I enjoyed both versions. The arrangement on Gretchen's version is close to Jackson Browne's original. That can be a good thing but, in this case, it sounded a little like she was singing karaoke. I was pleasantly surprised by the Wilson Phillips trio. I was expecting their version to be pop pablum but instead the girls came across with beaucoup feeling and soulfulness and their harmony is tight, sweet and pleasing. I vote for Wilson Phillips!

    Q & A:

What was the name of Dennis the Menace's grumpy neighbour?

    Red Forman

Who is your favourite fictional doctor?

Steven Hyde (ain't nothin' a good punch to the arm won't cure)

Do you have a favourite Jackson Browne song?

    "Hangin' out
    Down the street
    The same old thing
    We did last week

    Not a thing to do
    But TALK to you

    We're all alright
    We're all alright
    Yea!

    (Hello Wisconsin!)"

    Thanks, Jeffrey!

    1. I don't think it was Red. Ironically though, that was my grandpa's nickname.
So far, it seems like the battle is going to be one sided again. Hmmm, I really need to figure out how to choose a battle that is closer.

  4. I was feeling pretty poorly last week, but thankfully it has passed. Hope you get over yours soon. No fun being sick.

Back in the 90's I went through a big Wilson Phillips fan phase--not overly huge but I liked listening to their CD's. They are a good group and I figured I'd be going for their version before even listening. At first this was confirmed for me. Then Gretchen started taking hold of me.

The WP version is slick and maybe too much so. I like the crisp punchy sound of Gretchen's version. The more I listened, the more I started liking her voice. Give my vote to Gretchen Phillips for this match.

If I remember correctly, the neighbor was George Wilson. I used to love the Dennis TV show when I was a kid. Back about the same time there was a spate of doctor shows on TV but I was never into them that much. Can't think of a particular Dr at the moment--Dr Frankenstein maybe? Jackson Browne wrote so many great songs that it's hard to pick just one--"Fountain of Sorrows" comes to mind first, but there were an awful lot of good ones.

    1. Wow, I remember going through a Wilson Phillips phase too. My wife owned a few of their CD's. I'm actually surprised I don't own any myself. Perhaps next time I'm shopping at the discount store I'll pick one up.
      Thanks for stopping the runaway.

  5. Going with Gretchen Wilson, too. Wilson Phillips has nasty, sugar-coated associations for me ;) Great song, though!

  6. Wilson Phillips sounded very Wilson Phillips (not that there's anything wrong with that). Gretchen Wilson has a powerful voice that's grittier (and sometimes raw in a good way). So, I prefer her sound on this one, but they were both good. In case I was unclear, I'm voting for Gretchen Wilson.

Favorite doctor.... hmmm. I don't know. I found House very entertaining, but I wouldn't want him to be my doctor (even though the diagnosis was usually right). That guy has no bedside manner. I love the docs on Grey's Anatomy. I couldn't pick just one...:)

  7. Well, Mr. Wilson I do believe Dr. Welby is the only one to Doctor My Eyes ;-)
I hate to castaway the country gal, but Wilson Phillips gets my vote!

  9. Wilson gets my vote! (Just kidding. Well, no, but...) At first I thought you were going to tell me that metal band Wilson had covered this song - and although I've only heard one of their songs, I think I like them!

For your battle, I prefer Gretchen Wilson's twangier, grittier version. Great battle!

  10. Oh! And favorite fictional/tv doctor? Hands-down Dr. Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds! Not the type of doctor you meant, I'm sure, but he does hold that title!

  11. Jeffrey, cool twist of the battle of the Wilsons! I did not watch the videos, so this isn't a factor. Wilson Phillips lost my interest. I mean after all he's no Jackson Browne and maybe that's why I liked your second contender. I mean I didn't try to compare Gretchen Wilson to Browne. It made my job easier, but I did like her vocals. Gretchen's style was like a female version of Browne...sorta. Gretchen Wilsongets my vote. Interesting battle. Nicely don!

  12. Great battle Jeffrey! I love Jackson Browne and Doctor My Eyes is one of my favorite songs! I think my other fav JB song is You Love the Thunder.
As for your battle, I'll go with Wilson Phillips on this one.
And Dennis the Menace's grumpy neighbor was Mr. Wilson, wasn't it??

Now you've got me on a Jackson Browne kick! Thanks for that. I needed some good JB! :)

  13. Not a fan of country music (despite living in Nashville!). I'm going to go with Wilson Phillips. It wasn't cool to say so in the 90s, but I've always found their voices so ear-pleasing!

I have never looked at Jackson Browne the same since Darryl Hannah's abuse allegations back in the 80s. Sadly, it may not even be true. Not like Sean Connery, where you can watch video of him saying sometimes a woman just needs a good slap. But once you get these things in your head, you can't get them out--I can't even listen to his music anymore.

    1. Yes, I remember when saying you were a Wilson Phillips fan was a bad thing. In fact, I wondered if that would still influence people today in this battle. I do like them though. THERE! I said it!!!
To be honest, I must have had my head stuck in the sand. I really don't recall those allegations. And yes, even a false accusation can make people second guess your motives ever-after. Sad when they are not true.

  14. I'm voting for Gretchen Wilson. I like the piano, the beat, her voice. Win, win, win. I do like the band Wilson Philips, though.

I love the picture of Wilson. I actually have one of those...but my nephews play with it now so he's starting to look like how he did at the end of the movie. HAHAHA!!!!

  15. Well. I am surprised at myself. I honestly thought I would be giving my vote to Wilson Phillips, as I have always enjoyed them. But Gretchen Wilson knocked it out of the park for me. Please give her my vote.

Mr Wilson was Dennis the Menace's neighbor. I grew up watching Dr Welby. And there are just too many Jackson Browne songs that I thoroughly enjoy to pinpoint a favorite. Oh, yes, and your photo of Wilson was not lost on me. Excellent choice!

I do hope you are feeling better.

  18. This song was a real favorite of mine the first time it came out and I've found I still like it. Thank you, for that!

My vote goes to Wilson Phillips - can't get away from my love of a tight harmony. Good battle, Jeffrey!

  19. Not a big fan of Wilson Philips and thoroughly detest Gretchen Wilson (I still consider her a no talent one hit wonder), so either cover wouldn't do it for me.

No fave t.v. doctor to speak off and as for favorite Jackson Browne song, I have two.

1} Early classic: his version of "Stay".
2} Late 80's comeback, "Lawyers In Love".

  20. Hokey-Smoke, JEFFY, this was a good one, Brother! I liked both recordings but my vote is a total slam dunk. In fact, this one seemed so obvious to me that I'm rather shocked you have a close contest here. To my ears, this has "shutout" written all over it.

GRETCHEN WILSON gets my vote. And, sheesh! Who the hell is playing that piano? Is that her? What a fabulous rolling keyboard sound - it knocks me out! The guitar work is absolutely first-rate, too. I may have to check this chick out. If all her stuffs is this good, she's just made a new fan.

I listened to her version a second time just for the pure joy of it. I can't get enough of that rolling piano!

I'm not really a major fan of Jackson Browne but back in the "Licorice Pizza" era I owned at least two of his LPs. My favorite of his songs? Well, 'Doctor My Eyes' is certainly one of them (Gretchen does it even better'n he does though). My very favorite would have to be 'RUNNING ON EMPTY'. (Does Gretchen do that one, too? Ha!)

Excellent Battle. One of your best.

  21. You can't beat the harmonies that Wilson Phillips brought to this one. Gretchen Wilson sounded like they stripped the vocal track out of Jackson Browne's version and substituted her voice. Wilson Phillips for me.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Gretchen gets my pick because I like her vocals much better for this song. I also like the music styling as well. In answer to your questions....Mr. wIlson, Dr. McCoy, and no favourite.

    ReplyDelete
  23. That's a tough one! One would be a great party song because it would blend right into the background smoothly and enhance the mood--namely Wilson Phillips. Gretchen's would be more of an acoustic performance, where one actually pays attention to the vocals, instrumentals, and harmonies! My vote goes to Gretchen for that reason.

  24. SURPRISE! SURPRISE! I liked Gretchen Wilson better than Wilson Phillips. I don't care for much of her other stuff ('Red Neck Woman'-an absolute disgrace to the female kind), but this one was rockin'. Give Gretchen my vote.

Favorite doctor, humm; I dunno, Dr. Jones (Indy) maybe.
Favorite Jackson Browne song, no doubt about it 'Running on Empty', been there, done that.
Oh yeah and Grumpy Mr. Wilson. Love the character by Walter Mathau, in the movie version of Denise the Menace.
Also, I love the pic of 'Wilson' the real star of 'Castaway' at the end of your blog post there.

sorry I'm so late in stopping by, it's been that kind of week. I hope you start to feel better soon. I can relate, it's been a rough winter for me too, but it looks like spring is on the way, even in the high Sierra, where I live.
