R.a.n.t. for week of 06/28/15
This was a weekend initially earmarked for getting serious (or series) writing done. After (during actually) my April A-Z r.a.n.t.-fest, attention to my short story series 'Writer's Block' was placed on the back burner. Till then, I was getting one chapter posted a week. As it's a short story series, the chapters are really not that long. But now the intense April is almost two full months behind and I've noticed I have not returned to the series.
Clicking the 'Writer's Block' link above, you will notice I have one full story complete and the second episode with six chapters complete. It's been my long desire to finalize this piece of work. So why have I not gotten back to it? One word. Irony. Get what I mean? So how do I get back into the habit? As mentioned above, I meant to get some writing done this weekend, but as always, things came up. I helped a friend move on Saturday and Sunday I was lazy. Realistically, I was tired from the day before. I'm not spring chicken any more. Looks like the next few weekends will be utilized for helping others as well. No, I'm not ranting about helping others, because I enjoy being appreciated and feeling wanted for something. But how do I jump back in? How is it I can find time for so many other people, but never find time for myself? How do I get inspired? Where has my zeal gone? Where is my motivation? Can you help with some positive affirmation?
Some questions for discussion.
How do you battle Writer's Block?
What do you do to unwind?
Do you ever feel pulled in 15 different directions?
Did you know Jeffrey Scott has it's own Facebook Page?
It's true! Follow the link below.
It's a great way to keep in touch apart from leaving comments here.

Disconnected
R.a.n.t. of week 04/27/14
Before I begin my r.a.n.t. for the week, let me check the date.
Yep, just as I remembered. The year is 2014, not 1984. I just wonder if all of my friends are aware of this. I've always followed along with technology. To be honest, I'd be lost without it. Does that make me a techno-nerd? Or just trying to remain connected? With all the sophisticated technology available, I'm surprised certain people don't wish to take advantage of it. Recently, one of my friends was irritated (and rightly so) when he was not informed about an event taking place to which many others were aware of.
Was the event posted to twitter, Instagram, Facebook or G+? No, it was not. Well, I may have actually said something about it on Facebook, but the "official" invite wasn't posted there. For the record, I do try to understand when a person doesn't want to get involved in various social media sites such as Facebook. Their worries may be well-founded, information posted there may one day be used against them, especially if they are ever hacked. But, in most cases, you only get 'out' of something, what you put 'in'. If you are not sharing personal photos, phone numbers and addresses, what's the harm? The benefit I see is keeping in contact with as many of your friends as possible. But I digress.
Back to my friend, we were talking about him not being informed of an event. As for the 'official' plans, they were 'group texted' to everyone. However, my friend doesn't even do text messages. As odd as that is, I have another friend who doesn't even use email. If the person isn't personally called or talked to face to face, they will have no idea what is going on. Granted, I can see the appeal of receiving a person phone call, or a visit from a friend when they have news To be honest, I love when friends stop over or call, it just doesn't happen often. But the downside of a personal phone call or visit is it takes time. If I have a party I'm planning and I know everyone receives texts, are on Facebook or has an email account, I'm more prone to going that route than going the following way:
dial 555-1516 - Hi this is John, leave a message.
2 minutes later
dial 555-4815 - "Jack, I'm calling to.... what? Yea, I heard about your trip......
35 minutes later
dial 867-5309 - "Jenny, I'm having a party. We're going to have a good time, so I thought I'd give you a call. The date is....
6 minutes later
dial 555-4223 - "May I speak with Charlie please?........ Hey, how you doing? I'm calling to invite......
21 minutes later......
So an hour has elapsed and I've reached only three of my friends and left a phone message with one. Should I call that one person back later to make sure they got the message? Yea, probably. I supposed if I want to get fancy about it and still take a lot of time, I can write out party invitations and request r.s.v.p's so they will be responsible for letting me know. Or, maybe I could do this.
Text (John) 555-1516, (Jack) 555-4815, (Jenny) 867-5309, (Charlie) 555-4223, (Kate) 555-1542, (Ben) 555-1648, (Michael) 555-8423 "Hey all, having a party on the 23rd, you're all invited. Let me know if you can make it.
5 minutes later
DONE
No, I'm not saying everyone MUST or SHOULD get involved in social media. Neither am I saying everyone NEEDS to have text messages equipped. I understand why people might not want to do that. All I'm saying is, it's so much faster and fun. So, even though I won't hold this against someone, I may still r.a.n.t. about it a little bit.

Insomnia
R.a.n.t. of week 12/22/13
It's 2:00 AM and unlike the rest of the city, you are wide awake. The sheep have run off, you are out of warm milk and suddenly you notice how loud the bathroom tap drips. I've had this problem the past few nights. There always seems to be some other reason why I can't fall asleep. Either I've had too much coffee in the day (okay, my own fault), or my back is hurting (I may need a new bed), or there is too much on my mind. Trust me, with two teen-age kids in the house, there is a LOT to worry about. So, what's a person to do? I posed this question earlier today and came up with a few suggestions which I'll post in a bit, but first, you may wonder what ways I have found to combat this sort of malady.
Find something to pass the time. In January of this year, I discussed the benefits of Facebook. Certainly, Facebook isn't for everyone, but it has it's uses when one is bored, or needs to find something tiring to do. Spend a few minutes on one of the Facebook games and you'll be sure to start sawing logs soon enough. Not a fan of playing games online? There is always the option of scrolling Facebook and replying to updates others have left. Or peruse the many photos and articles your friends have shared with everyone.

Do a bit of studying. March was when I seriously started dedicating myself to learning a foreign language. So lately my evenings have been spend practising reading the Karen Sgaw language which is written in a different script than what most Westerners are used to. By the time I'm done with a full page, I'm yawning and getting restless. Perhaps doing something like learning a foreign language may be the thing to do when you are sitting wide awake early in the morning. At least it's a consideration.

Facebooking and learning something new not your style? Perhaps you can spend the wee hours preparing grocery lists and making sure you have all items needed for whatever intended recipe you plan to prepare for the week. I just ask one simple favour. How about finding a recipe or two that does not include cooking vegetables? In April I was relating how much I hated onions, really cooking vegetables in general, but most specifically onions. Go on, give it a try. It's early morning, you are battling insomnia, certainly you can be creative enough to devise some type of dish that does not require nasty onions or fungus? If you are unsure how your cooking will be without the use of such items, I'll happily come along and sample for you.

Sometimes when I'm awake at night I use music to change my mood. Soft music can do wonders for a restless spirit. My particular favourite type of music when trying to fall asleep is soothing jazz, classical, or even light contemporary. The problem with light contemporary, though, at times radio stations play music with a faster beat to it, which really doesn't lull one to sleep. More often, it tends to make a person want to get up and dance. One such song I heard played on a soft rock station on evening in June dealt with the year 1985. True, I've always been pre-occupied with that very year so I took a liking to it. So much in fact, I mocked it in one of my weekly rants. Essentially I took each line of the song and moulding it to fit my own particular lifestyle.

One of the last things I can suggest is a light snack to help the body along it's journey towards slumber. I'm not talking about running to Taco Bell or throwing a pizza in the oven. After all the fuss of running around outside or in the kitchen, you'll be more likely to keep awake instead of falling back to sleep. Go with something simple, a piece of cheese, a chicken leg, maybe even a balogna sandwich. Something simple and easy you can enjoy all to yourself. Speaking of dining alone, I talked about this very subject back in September. Granted, it was more about dining out alone at restaurants, but I think the point is taken. Sometimes it's good to dine alone, sometimes - not.

Finally, the last thing I've found to do when I'm wide awake, is utilize the quiet time to get some writing done. Like a few of the suggestions given above, I know this isn't for everyone, but it does work for me and I know a few other people this works for too. Jenni, one of my literary friends, has expressed to me how insomnia is even a blessing for her when she's trying to get an article finished for her magazine. As for Jenni, she came in handy several weeks ago in November when I decided to write a blog article on Ghost-writing. I secretly had her write the intro for my rant of the week, though I revealed it was her writing it, in the next paragraph. So what about you?

What do you find to do when suffering insomnia? Do you or will you utilize one of the suggestions above? Or maybe you have something else that helps. As mentioned before, here are a few suggestions from what other people this morning said about the topic.
Terry - I've memorized all 66 books of the bible... I go over them in order in my head and that helps.
Courtney - I just got this really good idea for a great story...at 1:57am and has kept me up, now 3:09am.
Mondo - When I start to get some good sleep, a co-worker would start spraying me with water.
Jenni Long - I go over Jeffrey's blog and count all the errors and typos.
Professor Sanee - When I can't sleep, I go out for a drive.

Julian
Julian was usually
an inquisitive sort,
and the kind of odd doctor
that liked to cavort.
With his good friend Miles
he'd drink synthetic beer,
Quark served them quite many
often resembling veneer.
Miles wife Keiko
would tease them with verse,
with an old Japanese haiku
she'd often rehearse.
"Drink with a Klingon
is only slightly better
then the Wrath of Kahn"
Miles and Julian,
they liked to canoe.
Flowing water a symbol,
life's hard to pursue.
No matter how dedicated
you work at your chores,
you're suddenly stumbling
like a drunk into doors.
Though often than not,
Julian had much more grace.
Quiet times he liked checking
the stations friendface.
He'd banter with several
while imbibing a Brandy.
Snarky, fun, friends like,
Peggy, Aimee, Lisa and Sandi.
When Julian was searching
for plots and intrigue.
The Cardassian Garak
he was often in league.
The stations life had a way
of appearing quite grim.
So keeping active was Julian's key
for renewed vigour and Vim.

I 'Like' It
R.a.n.t. of week 03/31/13
Some things can be bitter-sweet. For example, this entry. Bitter in the sense it points out a fault I have with people on various networking sites, but sweet in the sense if you are reading this, it doesn't apply to you. As a writer and poet; photographer and comedian, there is no better reward than to hear compliments of a job well done. It heightens the feeling of accomplishment. So that's why I find it difficult to understand when certain ones simply 'like' something, and that's as far as it goes. Even a general note of 'nice read' or 'love the photo' illustrates the person took the time to read the thing I wrote, or spent time looking at the photo I posted. I guess the negative feeling is intensified when I see how many other people get such a favourable response and varied input into the things they post. Keep in mind though, I also appreciate constructive criticism. I'm not clamouring solely for accolades. If you have good input, and it's constructive, I'd love to hear it.
As I started this entry out; if you are reading this, I'm not directing this at you. Mostly because even though I don't always get input in the form of a comment here, Twitter, Instagram or Facebook, I do hear back from people IRL or on the phone. I also know I do have a fan base that reads things regularly but don't always contribute a comment. That's their way and I'm fine with it, because I know they do appreciate the dedication I put into my craft. But there is a trend on some of the social media sites to simply "like" something, just because it's posted. Without giving it a second glance. In essence, it's kind of like saying, "It's nice you posted this, but I'm not going to waste my time looking at it."
So much for being positive in this r.a.n.t. as I was hoping to do this week. I may complain about others ranting and raving, but have to admit. Sometimes I 'like' it.

Cajun Style Bacon
R.a.n.t. of week 03/24/13
This weekend, one of my good friends posted a photo to Facebook, proud of his breakfast dinner. Let's be honest, who doesn't enjoy breakfast for dinner? However, one of the things discussed amongst a few of us was the degree to which the bacon was prepared. "Looks like you burnt that bacon." & "U ruined bacon........" were a few comments. After these jocular insults were thrown about, he replied "Where did all you haters come from.........scat! You know I like my fried meats borderline Cajun. I made it just the way I like it... perfectly crispy & crunchy all over & it tasted perfect!"
Just for the record, I'm certainly not ranting about (criticizing) anyone for how they enjoy their bacon. I've received my share of wise cracks regarding how I enjoy my meats 'well-done'. "You just ruined a piece of steak", is one insult thrown my way a number of times. Additionally, you know I wasn't seriously being harsh about the 'Cajun style bacon' because even I replied, "Burnt bacon is like Irish Coffee without the whiskey. It's still coffee, so still good...... just not as enjoyable."
So what am I really ranting about? To be honest, I'm not entirely certain. Maybe I'm upset how certain people like to criticize the way others enjoy their food. Or distressed over burnt bacon. Perhaps it's about the misuse of the word 'Cajun'. No, more likely I just decided to write about bacon because everyone loves bacon. Maybe that'll result in a few more readers and comments this week? Sometimes there is a method to my madness.
"You guys keep fighting. I'm going to make some popcorn."
"Don't burn it Jeff! But if you do, just call it Cajun!"

The Evil Book of Face
R.a.n.t. of week 01/20/13
I was talking with a mutual Facebook friend the other day about a post, suddenly another friend came up and mentioned how much they hated Facebook. I tried to ask what their problem was and for the most part they didn't know. The overall gist I think they were trying to make is it's invasive and intrusive. A point was made how they tried it once and got tired of friend requests from people they didn't know. Additionally, they read a story of how everything you post to Facebook is open for the entire world to see, despite your privacy settings. Overall, they didn't see the need for it. Okay, fair enough. But I look at it in a different way. From my perspective it's more of a tool. And like any tool, if you mistreat it, you are prone to get hurt. Imagine you suddenly decide to try juggling and think hammers or chainsaws would be cool to start off with. These tools are not meant to be juggled, so they are likely going to injure a novice juggler. Same thing for Facebook. If you don't want to be intruded, don't put things on Facebook you don't want others to see. Simple enough. Same goes for photos, places you visit or contact information. Personally I don't even put my full information up. Even my home town and current residence I change frequently. For me Facebook is a great way to stay in contact with friends, play games, and share my writing and photography. In fact once I'm done writing this article, I'll be posting to Facebook to share with others. See you there, unless you are going to practice juggling with swords, then I'll see you at St. Luke's.

Posting A Cat
Good morning friend,
where are you at?
I see you've already
posted your cat.
I'm not so good,
my car had a flat.
Oh there you are,
'nother post with a cat.
I was fired today,
how about that?
A third post from you?
It's not even your cat.
Then my house was egged
by that neighbourhood brat.
Yet I see you've found
that grumpy ol' cat.
Tripped in the dark
and I fell down flat.
As you posted a video.
It's a ninja cat!
I'm now ready for bed,
It's time I should scat.
you'll likely stay up
posting Garfield the cat.
