Spock, I Am

On a planet far away.
Lives a race so very rare.
They neither laugh in sheer delight,
nor other moods of great despair.

The Vulcan Spock was very keen.
He daily had to fight the urge.
Emotions what he felt inside.
'Twas this he strived so hard to purge.

Half human was he, did you know?
So meditation was the key.
Don't debate how emotions are a prize.
'Cause logically he'd disagree.

Vulcans thought a purge was best.
For their history, a violent time.
Anger, madness, gloomy moods,
soon became a planet crime.

Happiness was also gone,
and other feelings bringing joy.
Emotionless they proved to be,
which thusly angered Doc McCoy.

Spock, I Am Not

R.a.n.t. of week 12/21/14
Years ago, (let's say over 25) I was dealing with some traumatic things in my life. As the daft, emotionally, awkward teen I was at the time, I rarely allowed my emotions to surface. Or to be more precise. I never placed them on display. I would hold everything in. Unlike Spock, it wasn't really intentional, it was just something I did. I hadn't really noticed till one day my brother was upset with me for not being more emotionally distraught about what we were going through. I remembered him yelling at me, "You're Spock!" as though it were an insult of ultimate shame. I always find it somewhat funny. Though to be honest, I don't recall laughing about it at the time. I most likely held that in as well.

It was probably about the same time I made the concious decision not to write poetry. I considered it too "girly" and saw no point to it. As I recall, any of the poetry I wrote at that time was forced upon me through school courses. One of the first poems I wrote (if not the first) turned out to be a favourite of several people, though I never truly liked it. You can find that poem in my collection on this site. It's found HERE. To this day, I'm still unsure how I feel about it.

I was the same for many years, but as time goes on, one changes. For instance, I'm more in touch with my emotions and I proudly put them on display. I embrace each emotion and not ashamed of any. If I'm happy and I know it..... Why did I suddenly start singing? If I'm happy, I show it. If I'm sad, I show it. If you don't like it, too bad, I can't help that. But I also do poetry now too. I've found it to be expressive and beautiful or depressing and thoughtful. At times you can do more in a few lines of poetry than you can in a few paragraphs of prose. Poetry can be de-constructed and interpreted different ways. And that's partially why I'm not afraid of my emotions and will display them, I'm not worried about how others perceive me. Sure, some may see me in my gloomy moods and think that's all that Jeffrey Scott is, but how wrong they would be. As most of my readers here know, I'm also a very funny person and do much to express that as well. Whatever the mood, that's who Jeffrey Scott is, but it's never all-inclusive. Each mood is just a portion of the package. We are all happy, sad, gloomy, grumpy, excited, pensive, excited, stressed, courageous, amused, fearful or surprised from time to time. I have found a way to embrace each emotion and use each emotion. If I'm sad, I'll keep myself sad and use it. I'll write poetry, or just explore the emotion as much as I can. Others, like Spock, will just hold it in, angry at others for not feeling how they want them to feel.

Also, I am not:

Tuvok
I may seem distant at times, but I'm not unfamiliar with having fun. I have a large assortment of games at home; be them video, card or board games. You can always find something fun to do at my house.

T'Pol
I may not seem very adventuresome at times, but I'm always willing to try something new. Like travelling alone overseas. I just love doing that now. I'm also not afraid of trying new foods, even if I know I won't like it. And trust me, I've been served some really odd things.

Saavik
Humour may be a difficult concept, but I simply adore it. Love to have fun and play humorous tricks on people. Also like throwing in a few "Easter Eggs", even if for my own enjoyment.

T'Pau
I'm a big fan of 80's music as everyone knows. But it's not the only lyrical muse capable of captivating and inspiring my heart and soul. Jazz, classical, modern top 40, pop, rock, local, the list could go on.

Kirk vs. Vader

An experiment from Lord Darth Vader,
this long ago story was a crime.
Captained by legendary James T. Kirk,
the Enterprise transported out of time.

To catch a rebel Imperial traitor,
Vader's plans he thought was strong.
Then Jim called him an asthmatic jerk,
That's where the project went so wrong.

To rid himself of this invader,
Aura Sing was quickly called.
Jim greeted her warmly with a smirk,
Because he was so much enthralled.

Worse than the rebels, this crusader,
Vader's plans were such a mess.
His lightsaber now, his only perk,
perhaps he'd now enjoy success.

Because he was a true dictator,
the Emperor suddenly pulled the plug.
Anakin enraged, he went berserk,
so asked for Spock's help with a shrug.

Though he was the task creator,
Darth received a farewell gift.
Delivered from a postal clerk,
a certificate for a free face-lift.

I, Human

R.a.n.t. of week 02/09/14
Sonny - 'I, Robot' (2004)
As most people know, I love many science fiction films and television series. Inevitably, the same topic resurfaces. The concept of a robot, android or mechanical man who becomes or yearns to become more human. In real life, I seem to run into the opposite. Humans who are becoming more mechanical in nature. I've talked about no sense of humour before, and this is just one aspect of that. Why laugh when it's easier to grimace? Laughing would only show an emotion. Why seek out companionship when it's so much easier to live alone, do everything your own way and shut everyone out? Because sharing, caring and wanting companionship are based on emotions too. How about the people that are completely unaware of their surroundings? Little kids are good at this. Going from point A to point B without taking notice of anything around them. It's scary to think, but there are drivers that do this. Ever try to walk down an aisle of the supermarket but there is a person(s) walking down the aisle with a cart, moving so slow and completely unaware anyone is even around them? These are the same people. Completely oblivious of anyone else around them. But maybe it's not their fault, maybe they've been dealt such a bad hand in life, they've rationalized the best way to move forward is to completely switch off all emotions, all awareness of others and focus on just themselves. Admittedly it's much easier that way, but why? And as it any easier?

Leonard Nemoy - 'I, Robot' (1964)
The Outer Limits
Speaking from experience, I know it's not. When I was a teen I was dealing with a traumatic family problem. I became well known for having switched off my emotions. My good friend at the time used to call me Spock and for good reason. I too decided it would be easier to switch off all emotions. When you switch off emotions you are less likely to be hurt. Feelings like shock, anger, disappointment and sadness can be buried and the emotional pain is neutralized. But that just presents other problems. Eventually, the anaesthesia wears off and the pain returns, sometimes even greater. If that doesn't happen, it's just a steam kettle which keeps building up pressure until finally everything explodes. That's no good. I've had to learn that too. So today, I am not Spock. I wear most of my emotions on my sleeve. When I'm sad, I cry. When I'm happy, I laugh. If I'm dealing with an emotion I don't want to trouble others with? I'll just put on a mask which usually takes the form of a joke. it's why so many of my rant's you can find humour in. Still, emotions can be hard to deal with and sometimes I do look back and wonder if purging all emotions should be the way to go again. But no, better to deal with my emotions. So I'll continue to rant. After all, ranting is one of my favourite emotions.

People Who Have No Sense of Humour

R.a.n.t. of week 11/24/13
Knock Knock
Who's There?
No one, this is the internet, not a house.

Okay, that was dumb. That was truly stupid. But there are two types of people who just read that. The first type are the ones who rolled their eyes. The second type just scratched their head and said, 'huh'? Either they truly don't understand it, (see blonde joke below), or they understand it, but don't see why it's funny. Let's try another one.

It's going to be a dirty joke this time, so skip ahead if you don't like dirty jokes.
Q: What did the pig listen to while sitting in the pigsty?
A: A ham radio.
Again, that really was dumb. But it's proving my point. Either you rolled your eyes or simply failed to find why it was funny. Especially trying to figure out why I said it was a dirty joke. Which, to be honest, was the real joke. [Dirty = Pigsty]

I have a friend who needs me to explain every time I tell a joke, why it's funny. **cough, Jenni, cough**
"Why was that a dirty joke? You didn't use any bad words, it wasn't vulgar, I don't get it."
Sometimes I think my friend is a Vulcan. "Humour, it is a difficult concept." - Saavik.

Admittedly, I probably joke around too much. Usually it's to aggravate someone after they've made a typo or a funny sounding post. I certainly think I'm being funny, not sure about anyone else.
P.S. - "Why does everything at Starbucks take the same"
Me - "Take the same what???"
or
P.S. - "Kayra's going to drive through Indiana."
Me - "I didn't know Indiana had a drive-thru."
Usually I'll get a response similar to: "You know what I meant". Of course I know what they meant, but didn't think commenting on what they actually meant would have been funny.

"Any joke that needs explaining, isn't a funny joke." That may be true, but there are a few people who just don't get the joke, either because they are too literal or have no sense of humour. Here's a blonde joke I tell frequently that gets a lot of laughs.
A blonde is putting together a puzzle when she finally gets frustrated and calls her father.
Blonde "Dad, I need help, I can't even match the corners."
Dad "What's the puzzle? What's the picture on the box?"
Blonde "It's a picture of a tiger."
Dad "Okay I"ll be right there."
Upon walking into the room, he takes one look at the puzzle and says,
Dad "I have two things to say to you. One, this isn't a puzzle. Two, let me help you put those frosted flakes back in the box."

I've told this joke a few times and usually people laugh, but I've had a few people wonder, "Why was she trying to put together a box of cereal?" Because she's blonde. The joke really isn't that hard to figure out, and you must admit, you must have laughed, even a little (or chuckled, giggled or snorted). Or maybe you just have no sense of humour.

Speaking of being blonde, join me next week when I discuss 'When Technology Makes us Dumberer."

Tune in next week. Same bat-time, same bat-channel.
P.S. - "In case anyone thinks I've forgotten, here is the line I told you I was going to write last week."

NCC-1701

NX-01
It's been a long road,
getting from there to here.
Quantum leaps in travel
help explore the vast frontier.

Exploration is essential
for the Federations birth.
But do not stray too far from home
in case a swath is cut into Earth.

NCC-1701
Captain Kirk's a valiant fighter,
in a while his shirt is torn.
He's fought Pon-Far crazy Vulcan's
and an irate lizard Gorn.

Scotty is a miracle worker,
Uhura, Sulu, Checkov too.
Bones reminds us he's a doctor
The Enterprise's finest crew.

NCC-1701D
Q liked to torment old Picard
and introduced us to the Borg.
thank for nothing vile creature.
Wolf 359 is now a morgue.

Once again the ships in danger,
an unknown alien, vicious attack.
Saving the ship is ensign Wesley,
all before his noon-time snack.

NX-74205
Serving station Deep Space Nine,
Starfleets first Defiant Class
Worf commands her with a passion,
Not many would ever dare harass.

Benjamin Sisko, diplomatic leader,
the emissary of all Bajor.
Not afraid to get hands dirty,
to help them win Dominion war.

NCC-74656
Captain Janeway and the Maquis,
kind of like 'Lost in Space'.
travel home with Talaxian Neelix
and Tom Paris in disgrace.

The ship can land upon a planet,
who came up with that weird design?
I won't waste much time to wonder.
I'd rather ponder Seven of Nine.

Julian

Julian was usually
an inquisitive sort,
and the kind of odd doctor
that liked to cavort.

With his good friend Miles
he'd drink synthetic beer,
Quark served them quite many
often resembling veneer.

Miles wife Keiko
would tease them with verse,
with an old Japanese haiku
she'd often rehearse.

"Drink with a Klingon
is only slightly better
then the Wrath of Kahn"

Miles and Julian,
they liked to canoe.
Flowing water a symbol,
life's hard to pursue.

No matter how dedicated
you work at your chores,
you're suddenly stumbling
like a drunk into doors.

Though often than not,
Julian had much more grace.
Quiet times he liked checking
the stations friendface.

He'd banter with several
while imbibing a Brandy.
Snarky, fun, friends like,
Peggy, Aimee, Lisa and Sandi.

When Julian was searching
for plots and intrigue.
The Cardassian Garak
he was often in league.

The stations life had a way
of appearing quite grim.
So keeping active was Julian's key
for renewed vigour and Vim.
