Battle of the Bands - Werid Al Yankovic

It's April, fools!
This means I have agreed to a crazy thing called the A-Z challenge. Essentially, it means I'm going to be posting a new blog article each and every day. This also means I'm running out of time, but I still wanted to do my BOTB post. As such, I decided to do a quick and simple music battle. One where YOU get to decide what is being battled upon. Watch the provided video below. Is there a specific video you like the best? A specific parody? Which video most closely looks like the original? Is there a song you like better than the video? Do you just want to avoid Weird Al all together and tell me which is your favourite singer Al parodies? Tell me what you like best and I'll tabulate the votes. Yes, this is highly unorthodox, but being April 1st, I'm hoping to get away with it. Or I'm hoping with so many people tied up in the AtoZ challenge it'll slip past the BOTB censors. I'm kind of the BOTB Chuck Barris this entry.

BATTLE OF THE B̶A̶N̶D̶S̶ PARODIES

The musical contenders for this Battle of the Bands are below. Please listen and tell me what you like best. If you have the time and the motive, I have included links to the full videos.

2. Michael Jackson "Beat It" vs "Eat It"
3. Michael Jackson "Bad" vs "Fat"

6.The Presidents of the USA "Lump" vs "Gump"

  1. Great April Fools BOTB post Jeffrey! Wow, this is tough. I've got my favorites narrowed down to Bad vs Fat, Nirvana, Amish Paradise and White & Nerdy. I think it's going to have to be Amish Paradise vs. White & Nerdy as the final two. Now let me go back and just concentrate on those two. BRB.
Tough choice. I'm going to go with Amish Paradise. That one kinda cracked me up. But so did White & Nerdy. No, wait, I'll go with White & Nerdy...
Oh hell, you pick! Just kidding -- put me down for, um, White & Nerdy.

    Good one!

  2. I'll go with I Love Rocky Road. I do enjoy Weird Al and I am doing the challenge. There are few other novelty acts that I like as well.

  3. "Eat It" and "Fat" - we have a theme here. ☺ I love Weird Al! Actually, the one that made me laugh the most was "White & Nerdy". That gets my vote. Funny stuff!

    1. Weird Al loves to make food related songs, doesn't he?

  4. I love how close Weird Al comes to the original video. That guy is super clever. He doesn't change the lyrics, but uses the video. Makes me miss MTV something fierce. Of course, the ones I most familiar with are the first three (as they came alive when MTV was on fire). I thought pre-watching I'd vote for Eat It, simply because I've always found that one hilarious. BUT, it turns out that I really like White & Nerdy so much that I plan to click over to YouTube to watch the entire video. So, give me White & Nerdy for this one.

  5. Michelle and I are cut from the same cloth - gotta be Amish Paradise ("I'm a million times more humble than thou art") and White and Nerdy. Check out the video where Donnie Osmond and Al are laughing at their own antics on YouTube.

If I have to pick between those two: White and Nerdy. I laugh just thinking about it. Great job! We love Weird Al and we're in his Friends of Al fan club, ha ha.

    1. Are you really? I should join that. He's so much fun to see in concert too. This past Summer I got front row tickets to see his show and he walked right past our group as he was entering the stage. My buddy High Fived him.

I don't think I could get along with anyone who doesn't like Weird Al. The guy's a genius at parody.

I haven't seen many of Al's songs but enough to know how talented he is. I think of the ones I really know, maybe "SMELLS LIKE NIRVANA" might be my favorite. I hate that Nirvana song so much, and Weird Al does a great job of highlighting how utterly ridiculous it is.

Another parody artist I like a lot is Paul Shanklin. He mostly does political satire and he's also damned clever. One of my favorites by Shanklin is his tweaking of Pink Floyd's 'ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL' to skewer Barack Obama. This one's about 4 years old but really funny...

  11. Hi, Jeffrey!

If you are the BOTB Chuck Barris then I'm The Unknown Comic. :) This reminds me of "Anything Can Happen Day" (Wednesdays) on the old Mickey Mouse Club. Yes, I do like Weird Al and that's not just more of my bologna. My four favorite Weird Al song & video combos from this list are "Eat It," "Smells Like," "Amish Paradise" and "White & Nerdy." My vote in your battle goes to "Smells Like Nirvana" because the sound and visuals most closely match the original.

    Thanks, good buddy!

  12. Hello Jeffrey,

What a fun way to present April Fool's Day BoTB! I wish I had thought of this, but like you I'm too busy to give it that kind of deep thought. I mean I simply tied my two posts together. I am a Weird Al fan. He's probably the best parody singers to date, but that's just my opinion. I'm going to give my vote to #2 Michael Jackson Beat It VS Eat It. I think the reason is largely due to how popular MJ's song was at the time and then Al came along with his funny version and to this day I still find myself singing Eat It for no reason at all. lol Thanks for the entertaining battle!

    1. On this BOTB I would have gone with your original write in vote. Never was thrilled with the My Bologna song, but I Want a New Duck I loved, especially since it was a Huey Lewis parody.

  14. As much as I liked White and Nerdy, I have to say Amish Paradise is my all-time favorite. I mean, Florence Henderson in a video for a parody of a Coolio song. How can you beat that?

    1. I agree. I almost made this a battle for best celebrity guest in his video. Dick Van Patten always cracks me up when he appears.

  15. I have to give it to White and Nerdy because even in this parody, Donny Osmond is still nerdy. I love it!

  16. I've been a Weird Al fan since he first came out. My favorite parody vid is the "Smells Like Nirvana". They not only nailed the look and sound of Nirvana's original, I think funny made it better.

Not doing the A to Z, been there and done that and once was enough. You have a good time with it. Looks like you're off to a good start.

  18. This is genius, Jeffrey—and so perfect for April 1st :D I love them all. Any Michael Jackson parody is an improvement on the original, but these two are brilliant. The one that takes the cake—literally made me choke on my tea—is Amish (Gangsta's) Paradise. Love, love, love.

Very cool battle, Jeffrey. So glad I made it in before you posted results!
