This year, I'll be recalling some of my favourite programs from television, via A-Z, of course.

1950 - 1961 / You Bet Your Life featuring Groucho Marx
I was not familiar with this show, but I was familiar with Groucho Marx and the Marx Brothers. For me, they were rivals of the Three Stooges. Once in my teen years, I decided to host a Doctor Who themed party but most of us ended up looking like the Marx Brothers for whatever reason.
1958 / Yogi Bear featuring: Daws Butler, Greg Burson, Jeff Bergman
I was never much of a Yogi Bear fan, but if it was one when I was a child, I would watch it. Because, a cartoon is much better than morning news. Well, for a six year old child anyway. He would later be on one of my favourite cartoons, the Laff-O-Lympics.
1979-1990 / You Can't Do That On Television featuring: Les Lye, Abby Hagyard,
How many times have I actually seen this one? I don't know. But I never really saw it till cable became a big thing. For one of my classmates, I think this was his favourite show because he was always quoting from it. Eventually, he went on to be an inspiration for one of the characters in my Writer's Block series.

DeleteYou did good with Y! I found that to be a really tough letter. Probably the toughest one. I never heard of You Can't Do That on Television. What was that about?

DeleteYou Can't Do That on Television was a Canadian kids program. Kind of like a kids Second City Television. Mostly various skits and jokes.
I always felt so sorry for BooBoo having to deal with all Yogi's ideas :)

DeleteThe only one I know from this collection is Yogi Bear which I used to love. My nickname for all my pets has been Boo Boo, spoken in Yogi's voice... am I sad?

ReplyDeleteExcellent post, good buddy! I was a regular viewer of Groucho's series You Bet Your Life which included one of my favorite announcers and Groucho's sidekick on the show, George Fenneman. Fenneman made his film acting debut in one of my favorite horror/sci-fi movies The Thing from Another World (1951). Groucho Marx was a major influence on me as a child and I frequently use his style of humor on my blog. I was also a regular viewer of Yogi Bear and other Hanna-Barbera cartoon series. I remember the Canadian series You Can't Do That On Television. The series could not exist today because there is literally NOTHING left that you can't do on television. Duncan Yo-Yos were still popular when I was very young but I could never get the knack of doing tricks with them. I gradually lost interest in the Yo-Yo and turned to Wham-O toys which included the Hula Hoop, the Frisbee and (my favorite) the Super Ball. The York Peppermint Pattie was first produced in my hometown, York, PA, and I ate a gazillion of them.

Glad I was able to bring up such fond memories for you. I'm hoping you have enjoyed the entire series. I never got too much into Groucho, mostly because it was difficult for me to catch him in reruns. But I'm fairly confident if I had seen him in regular runs, I would have loved him.
DeleteYork - They probably throw out all the broken pieces at night. Is that how you were able to eat a gazillion of them? Or are you exaggerating again? I've told you a million or so times to stop that.
You caught me in a Shady fib. It's true. I tend to exaggerate. I seriously doubt that I ate more than a few hundred thousand P-mint patties.

DeleteI wonder if they still make Yummy Mummy cereal? It's hard enough to find Boo Berry anymore.
ReplyDeleteThere is a store close to me that still has Frankenberry and Count Chochula on the shelves. More often than not, you can catch Boo-Berry too. A few years back, they had Fruit Brute and Yummy Mummy back on the market, but I have not seen them since. Good thing I got a cereal box from them when they were back out. I don't talk about this too often, but I collect cereal boxes.
DeleteI hardly know any of these, but I do Yogi Bear. As you have probably guessed I am a cartoon fan. Still watch them when I have a chance. Yogi Bear and Boo Boo his sidekick were one of my favorite right alongside Schultz's Charlie Brown with Snoopy, Lucy and all the gang.

I loved reading snoopy growing up. I would collect bound collections from the library. I don't watch too many cartoons any more but I do still read a comic book from time to time.

ReplyDeleteIt was challenging for me. I probably watched 'You Can't Do That On TV' the most. I loved the show, it was hilarious (for a kid) and the character skits were interesting.
DeleteBelieve it or not, I was not a big Yogi Bear fan. Unless he was on the Laff-a-lymics.
If Groucho Marx were still alive I bet he'd still have folks in stitches with his one liner gags. As host he had such an easy manner with people which is easily appreciated in this video.
ReplyDeleteI agree. As I mentioned above, I can see myself being entertained by Groucho if I were to see him on TV now. I guess I missed the boat. But that's what reruns are for.

DeleteI can't say I've seen any of those shows, actually, even You Can't Do That on Television. Was that the show where people got slimed? If so, I didn't realize it went all the way back to 1979!
ReplyDeleteYes, they got slim dumped on them if they said the phrase, I don't know. Or anything similar. In doing my research, I also was surprised to find out the show went as far back as 1979.
DeleteI don't remember Groucho's show, but may have seen a few episodes. The title sounds familiar. Yogi Bear was a favourite cartoon back in the 60s; he was always trying to outwit the ranger at Jellystone Park. Boo Boo was cute. Haven't seen the other one or the commercials. It figures they would come up with a "Mummy" cereal to complement the Dracula and Frankenstein ones. Sugary junk!

DeleteI seem to think America has two parks named each way. One might be local though. LOL
Sadly Zima is the one I have memories of and dropping Jolly Ranchers into the bottles. Zorro was already a legend when I came along, I don't think I ever saw the show.
