The Listing Hop - Top Five Favourite Songs

I was recently with a group of friends when the topic of top five favourite songs came up. A few had a hard time deciding what to put on their top five, one had songs they liked, but couldn't remember the names of the artists. The interesting thing is, it doesn't matter if you remember the names of the artists, or if you can fill out your top five favourite songs on a moments notice. It doesn't even matter what the top five songs are. The thing is essentially a Kobayashi Maru test. (A no-win test that judges a persons internal character) There is no right way to answer the question correctly. But in this case, it's a test of determining what sort of music you listen to. A lot can be told about a person by the music they listen to. However, the question never got around to me. So you can say I got off "Scott" free. But I started wondering and created my top five list. So when I agreed to do this listing hop, I thought it would be a good time to explore my top five favourite songs. The list may surprise a few people (for what is or is not included), but there are specific reasons I have chosen the songs I have chosen and I shall explain.

Top Five Favourite Songs
5. Bond - 1812 Overture - I love this song as performed by Bond because it's always motivating and inspiring. Even when I'm in a lazy mood, when I play this song, I'm suddenly energized and raring to go. It's my go-to song for when I jog.

4. Beatles - Hard Days Night - I would be remiss if I didn't throw in a Beatles song. The Beatles were an amazing band and help revolutionize the music industry. As a Beatles fan, this is my favourite. Though if you ask me, it could use more cowbell.

3. Blondie - The Tide is High - "Wow! That is an odd choice", I hear you say. Though I do love the group Blondie, there is a specific reason I have this included in my list. It was the early 80s and I was sitting in my living room when suddenly a guy across the street walked past with his ghetto blaster blairing. The song at the time was this one. It was so catchy, I ran to see if I could find it on a radio station. Side note, till I heard this song, I never listed to music on the radio. So this is the song that got me interested in listening to music on the radio. I was probably 15 at the time.

2. Huey Lewis - The Power of Love - Unsurprisingly, another of my favourite 80s. Unlike the other selections, this song is chosen because for me, it typifies 80s music which I have come to love so dearly. There is no coincidence this is also the signature song from one of my favourite films as well. Can you guess it?

1. Michael Bublé - Haven't Met You Yet - One of only a few songs where I absolutely love the video as well as the song. As a single guy, I'm still looking for that one special lady. There has to be at least one special person for everyone. Shouldn't there be? But the problem is I've broken my hear so many times I've stopped keeping track. But I believe she is out there. Wherever she is and whenever it's right, she'll come out of nowhere and into my life. And I know we are going to be so amazing, and her love is going to change me. But I just haven't met her yet. One day I shall.

Top Five Questions:
5. What song really motivates you?
4. What song do you feel revolutionized music?
3. Do you remember a song that got you into music?
2. What is your favourite genre of music?
1. Which song best fits your life?
Bonus Question: Who did you think you would see on this list that you didn't see?

Perhaps I shall do a follow-up post indicating who my top five favourite artists are and why.
Hint: My top artists will not ALL be in that list.

  1. That is a unique choice of Blondie song. But hey, whatever got you to listen to the radio.
I was listening to music beforehand, but Rush's Permanent Waves album really got me hooked on rock, prog, and metal.

    1. I agree, it is an odd choice for a Blondie song. But, it got me interested in music for whatever reason. There is a good chance if he were blasting Rush or Run DMC or Journey my list would be different, but I probably would have still gotten interested in music. To my memory, it's the first real exposure I had to the music scene.

    5. What song really motivates you?
Nothing comes to mind for right now, but I once wrote a story inspired by the song Your Winter by Sister Hazel

Don't know, maybe Elvis--however my world was revolutionized by WHAM!--ah miss those days.
    3. Do you remember a song that got you into music? I was 3 years old the first time I saw an Elvis movie--Heartbreak Hotel has always been a fave that he did and Hound dog and Jailhouse rock.

    2. What is your favourite genre of music?
    Rock n Roll and Alternative
    1. Which song best fits your life?
LOL, not really sure, but fantasy I Wanna Be Rich by Calloway
Bonus Question: Who did you think you would see on this list that you didn't see?

  4. Scott free - good one!

Hi, Jeffrey! What? You didn't include "Pencil Neck Geek" in your top 5? :) But seriously, I'm shocked that Ms. Krall isn't on your list. (Her kiss is on my list. :) I honestly don't think I could name my top 5 songs because my tastes keep changing week by week. My Picks To Click among your top 5 are the Beatles and Blondie.

Have a great week, good buddy Jeffrey!

    1. I'm offended by your initial comments. I hate when people leave rude comments. But, I'll let it slide this time. I would never ask you to leave the Jeffrey Scott blog. My blog is only enhanced by your visits.

Yes, I knew you of everyone would wonder why Krall was not on the list. The long and the short of it is I love all her music and to pick only one as one of my favourites would be like asking which is my favourite breath of air. They all are, as long as they keep coming.

    2. Now I'm offended! I thought that I am your favourite breath of air! :)

  5. The Power of Love... Back To The Future.

I realize I'm just too tired to answer your questions right now. I didn't sleep well... at all. My favorite decade of music was 80s. I like songs from all decades, but as a whole... that's my decade.

The first record I remember owning was Cher's Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves. I was completely enamored of her. I loved the record. I loved her hair. I was probably 7 years old and walked around with a towel wrapped around my head so I could "look like Cher." Ha.

    1. I'm sure Cher would approve. You answered plenty of the questions. Cool.
So odd how for everyone, they got into music at different times in their life and for different reasons. There are people I know who STILL don't listen to music. I've always found that odd.

  6. I love your music picks. I change up my jogging music all the time, adding and deleting to my playlist. You made me realize I want to add The Power of Love.

  7. With so many to pick from it is a hard list to come up with. But I love almost anything sung by Josh Groban, Donna Summers, Allison Krause, Meat Loaf, The Moody Blues, Fleetwood Mac.
My favorite songs - Amazing Grace, When You Say You Love Me, Walk Away Renee, Unchained Melody, Crazy by Patsy Cline - oh, gosh there are so many more! :)

  8. I know two of the songs on your list (The Power of Love, Hard Days Night). Sadly, I don't know the Blondie song. I feel as though I now have to turn in my 80's child card.

    1. Well, Blondie was the tail end of the 70s as well. Bublé and Bond are current so don't beat your self up over the whole 80s thing.

    3. And yes, I figured you meant the theme music.

  13. Great list, Jeffrey—and great list idea, too. I suck at lists, always feel like I'm leaving something out (which is why I haven't gotten 'round to posting that 25-favorite-movie list Stephen asked for...), but I can tell you my #1 favorite song is Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. Weirdly, my first boyfriend used it as a "love" song—the same guy who told me he loved me by drawing a soundwave graph of "I love you"... Yeah, we were such geeks :D But that intro to WYWH was what started me kind of away from the radio and into more obscure music... I'm very grateful. I might be a Bieber fan today :D

Loved your list. And thanks for hopping over earlier to check out my own!

  14. I'd have a difficult time coming up with a Top Five Song list. Maybe Top 500 would be more like it. So many it's hard to decide. I think I get most motivated by classical music and that is mostly what I listen to these days, but I like all kinds of music. Where it all started I don't totally remember--I can't specifically recall an exact song, but it would have been something my parents used to listen to. As far as rock music, one of the first songs that really caught my attention was probably "Suspicion" by Terry Stafford, but there were so many songs that came out at that time that it was more like a music wave than just one song.

Not surprised with your Huey Lewis pick, but I wouldn't have guess your others.

    1. Yes, it was difficult to come narrow down a list to just five songs. In my music collection I have over 500 CD's. Any one of those CD's I'd happily bring along with me to play on a long car trip. One of these days I want to find a large wire rack large enough to hold all of the CD's so I can display them proudly.

As for my music tastes, as you can see, I love a wide assortment of music. Classical Pandora is one of my most played channels.

    2. I bought a couple of nice wood cabinets with glass doors to hold a lot of my CD's and DVD's. It looks good in our living room since it's a decorative as well as functional piece of furniture. However it barely holds all of my collection which is stored in other types of things. I got a few nice inexpensive cabinets and holders from IKEA and Staples.

  16. Interesting list! I would have a hard time picking only five, but "Nights in White Satin" is always #1. Huey Lewis was from Back to the Future.
    On to your questions:
    5. What song really motivates you? Motivates me how? Different songs motivate me for different activities. For instance, Rod Stewart's "Hot Legs" motivates me to do housework, along with other Rock and Roll numbers.
    4. What song do you feel revolutionized music? So many, from different eras: Elvis Presley's early recordings, Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild" (heavy metal thunder!), The Beatles' Norwegian Wood and many more......(See, it's too hard!)
    3. Do you remember a song that got you into music? Age 3, Volare by Domenico Modugno, then skip ahead 5 years to The Beatles' She Loves you.
    2. What is your favourite genre of music? Most genres of rock, especially classic rock
    1. Which song best fits your life? Two: Steppenwolf's "Straight Shootin' Woman, The Animals' "It's My Life"
Bonus Question: Who did you think you would see on this list that you didn't see? A rock band. (Well, I suppose Blondie qualifies, but that was a Reggae song).

    1. Huey Lewis is fairly close to the rock genre, Van Halen Aerosmith, AC/DC, Rolling Stones are just a few of my faovurite rock artists. As you say, so many to list.
But as I say, sometimes it's great to throw out a generic question and see how people answer it.

    2. Huey Lewis seems more "pop" than "rock", to me, but I don't know his whole catalogue. Ah, so you do like rock. I was confused there, for a minute. ☺
BTW, I love the 1812 Overture and some other classical pieces, like Hungarian Rhapsody and Habanera.

    3. I love Hungarian Rhapsody. Yes, I do love Rock music. I love all genres for the most part, but my favourites are pop/rock, especially the 80's and jazz music.

  17. I love your selection of songs! Definitely an unique pairing.

    5. What song really motivates you? Anything if I'm in the right mood.
    4. What song do you feel revolutionized music? ....
    3. Do you remember a song that got you into music? Nope. I've always been into music.
    2. What is your favourite genre of music? Yes? Too many to name.
    1. Which song best fits your life? Currently? In a New York Minute.
Bonus Question: Who did you think you would see on this list that you didn't see? LOL. You assume I have expectations.

  19. Great list.
    5. Fighter by Christina Aguilera gets me moving, but for writing it's Louis Armstong's What a wonderful world.
    4. Blondie strikes again with Rapture. I love Debbi, but her rapping lacks; still she got "average white America" wondering what rap was all about, if not at least acknowledging that the genre existed.
    3. I don't remember a time in my life when music wasn't present, so there isn't just one song that did it for me.
    2. I like so many, but Jazz, Big Band, and others from the 30s and 40s speak to me.

    3. Do you remember a song that got you into music? no, but Duran Duran got me really into music
