Nostalgia TV - S

Welcome to my A-Z list of 2016.
This year, I'll be recalling some of my favourite programs from television, via A-Z, of course.
How many of these do you remember?
Were these before your time?

This blog post has been written in front of a live studio audience.

1973-1978 / Six Million Dollar Man featuring: Lee Majors, Richard Anderson, Martin E Brooks
Playing the Six Million Dollar Man was almost a daily activity on the school playground. But then the fights would break out because we all wanted to be the Six Million Dollar Man. So there we were, six million kids all playing the six million dollar man together and we each had a different story why we were also the six million dollar man. I should really write a fan-fiction based on this.

1972-1977 / Sanford & Son featuring: Red Foxx, Demond Wilson
Add a laugh track and I'll watch just about anything. Truth be told though, I rather enjoyed this series. The humour, at the time, entertained me and the stories were interesting. It was something different. Years later, I would use the theme song as the ring-tone for my brother. (See entry for the Odd Couple)

1976 - 1984 / SCTV featuring: John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis, Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short, Dave Thomas
I discovered this show on late night re-runs. Every episode was so hilarious and I knew some of the performers. As time went on, I came to know more and more of the actors as they went on to some of my faovurite TV shows and films. My ultimate favourite skit was the Jeopardy based, Half Wits.

This A-Z list has been brought to you today, by....
1955 - Swanson TV Dinner

1962 - Starkist Tuna

1966 - Sky Ray Ice Lollies (Featuring Daleks)

  1. Oh Lord, I remember those Swanson frozen dinners in the silver trays! They were awful!
I love Charlie Tuna. Great commercial choices Jeffrey.
I remember SCTV but I don't think I ever watched it. Love the Sanford & Son theme song but wasn't crazy about the show. It was okay, it just wasn't a Go-To for me. My parents liked it though so I saw a fair amount of it.
That was funny about you kids playing Six Million Dollar man and fighting. Lol.

    1. I loved SCTV. It was on late at night so I had to sneak to the TV to watch it. My dad hated when I stayed up after everyone else. I too remember those dinners in the silver trays.

  3. Hi, Jeffrey!

This is a Super S list, good buddy! I watched Silver Spoons starring Ricky Schroder. I was in love with co-star Erin Gray (and she didn't even know it). I saw $6 Million Man and Sanford & Son a few times but was not a regular viewer of either series. I did watch Second City TV, birthplace of many Canadian TV and movie stars. When I was away at college, I practically lived on Swanson frozen TV dinners. (I just threw up in my mouth a little.) I have consumed my share of Starkist Tuna but prefer sardines packed in spring water. (Sorry, Charlie.)

I know it's off topic, but I would like to take this opportunity to recall the horror movie Sssssss which revolved around a man who turned into a snake.

    Thanks, good buddy Jeffrey!

    1. When was that filmed? I don't seem to recall it.

    2. 1973. It starred Dirk Benedict ("Face" on The A-Team) as the snake boy.

    3. As long as we are talking about Dirk Benedict trivia, did you know he appeared in the UK version of Celebrity Big Brother?
Unfortunately, he didn't win. Though he and Bollywood actress, Shilpa Shetty had a close friendship throughout the show. Until he was finally evicted.

  4. We got the Six Million Dollar Man here in Britain but I don't recall any of the others. I'd like to say I'm too young to have seen them but, unfortunately, that would be a lie! My family loved the Six Million Dollar Man.

  5. Oh always loved watching the 6 Mil. $ Man even when Big Foot was in a couple of episodes. Sanford and Son is another I used to watch but I also watched Sonny & Cher which I loved! If I watch it now, I wonder if I would groan. I remember the TV Dinners and liking the salisbury steak(ick) and i Loved Charlie!

    1. Oh wow! I forgot about the Big Foot episodes.
I think most of these shows we would groan if we watched them again.

  6. The Six Million Dollar Man was a popular choice in our house, too. As for Sanford and Son, I always got a chuckle when he feigned the heart attack (which was regularly).

S shows I miss (which means they've been cancelled): Seinfeld (who doesn't), Smallville (oh my!), and Sex In The City (which I confess I sort of lost interest in after the Aidan character left, but until then...!).

    1. This may shock you, but I never watched Smallville. Yes, I know, I know. And I miss seinfeld too.

  7. Do I remember The Six Million Dollar Man with Lee Majors, Yes!
And Sanford and Sons with Red Foxx as Pops and his son played by Demond Wilson, Yes. I used to love watching Fred Sanford and his buddies for the humour.

  9. Cats came out of the woodwork for Starkist! Our schoolyard was much like yours except the girls always chose who would be the six million dollar man;-) The rest of the guys went away muttering like Sandford about the travesties of life:-) The Sanford theme song is hard to get out of your head, isn't it?

    1. I mentioned this in a previous post, but for a while I had the Sanford and Son theme song set as my brothers ring-tone. Yes, he always had a messy room.

  11. I vaguely remember seeing reruns for the Six Million Dollar Man and like the poster above, I also remember the Bionic Woman.

  14. I remember when the Six Million Dollar Man first hit my tv screen and thinking, wow, jeepers, this guy is the real deal - lol. New eyes, hearing, legs. It turns out Lee Majors did most of his own stunt work. If only he knew about high priced stuntmen...

  15. I've seen all of these shows and ate a few TV dinners over the years. I actually liked the turkey one. ☺ Another fun trip down memory lane. Good stuff!

    1. Yes, the turkey ones were good. But I always had to eat two. Not just one.

  16. I was more a Bionic Woman gal, myself. It's the girl thing and that show started just a touch later. I think I did see Sanford and Son. Again, I was a little young, so I didn't have the choice in the matter.

You totally need to write that fan fiction.

  18. We loved the Six Million Dollar Man.

Back in the day, I remember it was a big deal to get a TV Dinner. I couldn't wait for my parents to go out and we'd beg for them, promising that we could make our own supper if Mom got TV dinners. In retrospect, it was just another gimmick that pulled us in...it certainly wasn't the FOOD.

    Great post!

    1. No, the food has never been the real deal. I think what's kept them around is the fact they are handy, and quick. I hate to admit, but to this day I keep a few in the freezer for the days I'm too lazy after work to do any cooking.
