Nostalgia TV - N

Welcome to my A-Z list of 2016.
This year, I'll be recalling some of my favourite programs from television, via A-Z, of course.
How many of these do you remember?
Were these before your time?

This blog post has been written in front of a live studio audience.

1972-1977 / New Zoo Revue featuring: Doug Momary,Emily Peden, Chuk Woolery
I was just a wee lad when this was on TV. It was on either before Saturday morning cartoons or Captain Kangaroo, I don't recall which. Though I don't remember much from this show, I do recall it kind of creeped me out. But I still watched it. Hope I creeped you out today.

1982-1990 / Newhart featuring: Bob Newhart, Mary Frann, Jennifer Holmes, Julia Duffy, Tom Poston
For whatever reason, I initially though this was a continuation from the Bob Newhart show. For whatever reason, I got it in my mind, he was had retired from his Psychiatrist job to do something different. Funny thing that, with the finale scene of this series, I was correct. It was kind of a continuation. Those who know what I mean, will know what I mean. ;)
The ending credits always finished with Bob Newhart saying 'meow', that always cracked me up.

1982-1983, 1986-1988 / Nine to Five featuring: Rita Moreno, Valerie Curtin, Rachel Dennison, Jean Marsh & Jeffrey Tambor
Spinning off from the feature film, this series was much alike, despite the change in actors. Doesn't Dolly Parton's replacement look just like her? I heard it's her actual sister! Though I did like the film and was aware this was on TV. I don't recall ever watching it, though I thought it was cool Doctor Who alum, Jean Marsh, was in this series.

This A-Z list has been brought to you today, by....
1955 - Nestle's Quik (Featuring Jimmy Nelson)

1968 - Nabisco Chips Ahoy

1990's - Nerf (Featuring Seth Green)

  1. N was a tough letter. Interesting that neither one of us included Night Court. I was going to but I just wasn't into that show so I didn't.
As always, you brought us some fabulous old commercials! The Nestle Quick spot cracked me up...
Hope you're enjoying your weekend! Dying to know where in NY you went...

    1. I was thinking of adding Night Court, but then I opted for the lesser known shows. I think those are fun to review too. Which is unfortunate because I LOVED Night Court.
I went to Rochester NY, unfortunately I never made it to New York City. But I did get to Niagara Falls.

  2. Hi, Jeffrey!

You've got some Nerf putting together a post like this. :)

I was a regular viewer of Rod Serling's Night Gallery, but it paled in comparison to his earlier triumph The Twilight Zone. I liked The Bob Newhart Show more than Newhart (except for the shocking series finale when Bob awakes from a dream and we discover that he is actually married to Pee Wee Herman). I had forgotten that they made a 9 To 5 TV series based on the successful movie. When I was a news producer, we did a live remote interview with Rita Moreno during one of my newscasts. Jeffrey Tambor is one of my favorite actors and does a fine job playing a judge on The Good Wife. As a kid I drank Nestle's Quik with milk and often alternated with Bosco, Ovaltine and Hershey's chocolate syrup.

Thanks, good buddy Jeffrey, and have a great weekend!

    1. I didn't know you were a news producer. That is so cool. Jeffrey Tambor is fabulous in Arrested Development. Tell me you have seen that. I agree, I never liked Night Gallery as much as I liked Twilight Zone.

  3. Do they still make Nestle's Quick?
I enjoyed both Newhart shows and really dug the way that one ended!

    1. I believe they do still sell Nestle's Quick.
Yes, like Shady said above, the trick ending was hilarious, even if it wasn't Pee Wee Herman he woke up too.

  4. I used to watch Night Gallery. Not as good as The Twilight Zone. New Zoo Revue does look creepy. Never saw it before, but I'm obviously much older than you, Jeffrey. I got married in 1973. ☺ The second Newhart was not as good as the first series, but the ending was killer. Loved it! Re: 9 to 5: Rachel Dennison is indeed Dolly Parton's younger sister. I remember that show but it didn't last long. Don't remember the commercials, but the Nestle's Quik jingle sounds familiar. Was that Howdy Doody? A little before my time. Hope you're having a fabulous time in New York City!

    1. Had a great time in New York, but I was in Rochester and Buffalo. I was only 3 when you got married. ;)
No, not Howdy Doodie. Jimmy Nelson is the Ventriloquest and his dummies are Danny O'Day and Farfel the dog.

  5. I can't believe we've hit a letter in which I've watched NONE of these. None... with an "N." Somehow that seems appropriate.

    1. Not even the commercials? I shall try to go back to some more convention theme songs to satisfy your nostalgic hunger.

  6. I always drank Nestle's Quick and it was in that same can too. I enjoyed Night Gallery even if it wasn't as good as Twilight Zone but Serling had trouble with the executroids. Newhart was fun and loved the Darryls. I would add Night Court which I thought was hilarious. Jon Larroquette made the show

    1. I was going to add Night Court. I probably should have over the first show I featured, but that had such memories for me for creeping me out, I had to use it. Plus I just used John Larroquette, so there was that.

  7. Night Gallery was pretty good, but I liked the Twilight Zone much more.
Newhart was a family favorite but I was usually doing something else;-) Nestle's Quick brings back sweet memories - loved how it smelled when you first popped open the can.

    1. I think we all liked the Twilight Zone more. Serling didn't get to have as much input into Night Gallery from what I understand. I used to use chocolate syrup to make my chocolate milk. But I think I stopped that when I started to simply buy chocolate milk in the store.

  12. I don't know any of these! But I did love the 9 to 5 film—and watched it over and over :D I think that was my introduction to Jane Fonda, actually... I suppose better that than—what was the name of that intergallactic film of hers? Not Xena... wait, it'll come... got it! BARBARELLA. That was... not my cup of tea :D

Thanks for all the visits over at Life In Dogs, Jeffrey... I love your comments :)

  15. Weird co-incidence: I sing all the old theme songs, just to annoy my family. New Zoo Review was what I was singing this morning.

  18. You had me at Rod Serling! I remember that 9 to 5...and yes, that's one of Dolly's sisters. Another of her sisters was at Dollywood last time we were there. My husband runs into famous people around Nashville all the time but all I get is Stella Parton! You'd think if Dolly's sister was ON the show, they could have wrangled the rights to Dolly's version of the song for the opening, right?!

  19. Jeffrey, The New Zoo Revue, boy is that a flash from the past! I remember this show. I don't remember how involved I was in watching it, but I do recall seeing it. The Newhart show was a favorite of ours, which aired in our early years of marriage. We grew up watching Bob Newhart in the late 60s and 70s. It seems like he may had a small run on The Desperate Housewives. Thanks for the memories!

    1. When I was younger, I thought Newhart was a continuation of the Bob Newhart show. I never even noticed it was a different actress playing his wife. I eventually realized my mistake. But it made the final scene that much more hilarious to me.

  20. I also wrote about Newhart as my fave N show from the 1980s. I loved Larry, Darryl and Darryl - laughed every time they were introduced. And the last scene of the series bringing 1970s bob newhart back was brilliant.

    1. Bob Newhart was a true comic. Until only recently have I actually listed to a few of his stand-up routines. When I was younger, I never took him for a legitimate stand up, despite his shows being very funny.
