The Wisconsin State Fair just started this weekend. It always bums me out when the fair starts because when it is over, it's the first sign that Summer is wrapping up. I suppose, that's part of my Summertime Blues. What signals the end of Summer for you?
Another thing that might make a person feel blue, is to lose a competition. In this edition of Battle of the Bands, I fear one of the contestant is going to be feeling blue. But who is it going to be? Here is a little hint from the first round of votes. After the first five votes were compiled, Alan Jackson took an early lead of 5-1. In fact, Alan Jackson took the first four votes.
Round two arrived and again Alan Jackson took charge, scoring four of six votes. It seemed Olivia Newton-John was not fairing well. She was now trailing behind AJ 9-3. But I've seen put up a better fight in future rounds. Was that going to happen this week?
The third round was exciting for me, mostly because I saw some familiar faces stop by I haven't seen in awhile to cast a vote. There was even a friend of mine who surprised me by stopping in to vote. Did any of this help Olivia? Not at all. Another six votes were cast in round three and Alan Jackson walked away with five of the votes.
Our fourth and final round sealed the deal, and really if all votes had gone to Olivia, she would still have lost. But did she get any in the last round of voting? She did, just one. And even being an Olivia Newton-John fan, I had to admit I liked the Alan Jackson (Country) version better. Shhhhh, don't tell anyone I picked the country song.
Final Tally
Olivia Newton-John - 5
Alan Jackson - 19

Between these two, my choice is Alan Jackson. Olivia's voice is too "girly".

Sorry, Olivia is just too cute. And I do like her version better.
Arlee Bird
I love Olivia, but not so much on this song. It's just not her.
My vote goes to Alan Jackson--name, twang, and fiddle too.
Stephen T. McCarthy
Aww, JEFFREY, you stole a song from my 'Future BOTB Songs' list. But that's OK, because I was planning on using two different performers, and so I may do that still, somewhere down the road.

I was a huge ONJ fan as a kid and I'd never heard her version of that song before. Her voice has always been so amazing!

I've loved the AJ version since it came out. To be fair, I've loved ONJ since Grease. BUT, I didn't really care for her take on this song. I think maybe the song is just better suited for a male voice. Or maybe an alto voice in a female. So, I gotta give this one to Alan Jackson:)

First vote- goes to the song on the commercial before Jackson's version!

I vote for Olivia Newton John. I've loved her for so long. I saw her perform the week that I Honestly Love You because #1. Alan Jackson is too twangy. I'm not a big country music fan. Olivia has a great voice.

I love this feature! I do hope you'll feature some unknown artists with amazing covers on YouTube. :)
I enjoyed Olivia's version quite a bit, having never heard it, but Alan gets my vote. He's just so much more peppy any fun. Olivia slowed it down a little and it lost something for me.

Alan Jackson is such incredible singer. U are handsome and nice voice.

I've chosen Olivia Newton John. She injects a lively round of brio into her Summer Time blues. - There ain't no cure for the summer times blue, which is so true.

Are you currently in the BOTB and don't see your name in the list above? Let me know in comments and I'll include it.
Hi, Jeffrey! Thanks for reporting the results of your BOTB. I am surprised by the outcome. I actually believed that ONJ would win. As I experienced it, Olivia's version had more zest and spunk and did not sound "girly." I think the lopsided vote is indicative of the image problem that plagued Olivia for a long time, that of a lightweight pop, country and soft rock songstress. Determined to shed that image, Olivia reinvented herself in the late 70s and early 80s. She turned on the girl power, dressed in leather and recorded the titillating title "(Let's Get) Physical" and other material to keep step with the changing times.
ReplyDeleteThanks for another great battle, Jeffrey, and have a nice weekend!
Thanks for the words of encouragement. Yes, it seems so many people 'banned' Olivia from serious consideration. Though I did choose Alan Jackson (or a friend of mine was going to beat me up), I know Olivia would win if I were to see her in another competition.
DeleteJEFFREY ~
ReplyDeleteWow! That was some heart-stopping, fingernail-biting BOTB tension, eh? Ha! Well, we've all had our blowouts. It happens.
The worst though is when you have such a massive blowout that the loser gets only ONE VOTE and that one vote is YOURS! That happened to me in BOTB #2. And adding insult to injury was the fact that I was certain the band I voted for was going to win by a huge margin. Only my lone, honest vote saved me from a shutout in that one. I couldn't believe it. I STILL can't believe it! And I had been worried beforehand that it might be a shutout IN THE OTHER DIRECTION.
Right from BOTB #2 I realized how unpredictable BOTBs can be. I've gotten much better at predicting them, but that's only because I've now got 49 of them behind me. Practice makes... so-so. Ha!
I like your "Top Comments" feature. That's a nice item you've invented.

The great thing about so many different people joining in the BOTB now, is the great diversity in which they all present it.
DeleteThanks for stopping by and checking the results.
Bummer! She's still really cute though.
ReplyDeleteAgreed
DeleteI've heard too many stories about what a complete jerk Alan Jackson is to ever say anything positive about him. Living in Nashville, you hear stories...in fact he's one of very few country stars I've ever heard anything bad about.
ReplyDeleteI have not heard those stores, but it doesn't surprise me. Behind the scenes, many of our favourite singers, actors and what have you, lead person lives and are people we would never be friends with.
DeleteNice battle! I look forward to your next one.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to your next vote.
DeleteThis outcome doesn't surprise me at all. Now put Olivia with a different song and I'll probably be voting for her.
ReplyDeleteFor me the end of summer is when my wife goes back to her teaching job. It brings back my own memories of going back to school and the end of summer vacation.

Tossing It Out
Now that my kids are out of school (well, one will be a Senior this year), I always tend to forget when school is in or out. Of course, the fact they live with their mother is also part of the problem.
DeleteI chose Olivia because shes a brave, funny, beautiful and most important of all talented singer. Shes still pretty hot despite marriage and a divorce.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. However, I didn't choose her for this battle, but like Arlee above said. Any other song and I'd certain pick her.
DeleteWoot! Another one I voted for who won. I'm good at this. :P
ReplyDeleteLet's see how you do on my next battle. I'm looking into doing something different. We'll see if I end up doing it though.
DeleteInteresting battle! I've never been a fan of Olivia's, so Alan Jackson was the only choice, even if country isn't my favourite genre. Looking forward to your next one.
ReplyDeleteI think I may do something a little different with my next battle.
DeletePerhaps an 'experimental' post.
It looks like my pick won. I love ONJ, but her cover just didn't cut it for me. As far as summer coming to an end, I really don't think about that until after Labor Day and to me that's the unofficial end even though there is plenty of warm weather until the end of September. I'm not going to worry about it, but embrace the seasons as they come, but if I'm honest I have to admit I'm looking forward to autumn. Thanks for sharing the results of your last battle!
ReplyDeleteI have this theory the seasons have gradually started shifting. Seems Winter starts off very mild lately, and Spring always takes forever to get here.
DeleteSorry I missed this past battle. I was out of town and knew I wouldn't be able to play along or get to everyones battle.
ReplyDeleteI grew up idolizing ONJ after watching Grease 17 times the week it came out. I had the album and the poster, etc. I still would have gone with Alan Jackson on this battle. He does a great job and I'm a country fan.
I find it surprising that many of the commenters love ONJ, myself included, but still picked the Alan Jackson version.
DeleteLooking forward to seeing your next battle.
