Battle of the Band Results - Mandolin Rain

As much as I'd like to say this battle could have gone either way, I think it was quite obvious who the winner was going to be. But, for formality sake, let's pick apart the battle. For our first round, Bruce Hornsby took the early lead. Though a few did like Pam's version (and some did not) it was Bruce's battle to lose.
Bruce Hornsby First Round Votes: Stephanie, Hilary, Arlee & Robin.
Pam Tillis Final Round Votes: Shady & Dixie

If there were any questions in the first round of the battle, the second round pretty much put the question to bed. Pam must have stepped out to powder her nose or something because there was no showing for her at all. All six votes went to Bruce.
Bruce Hornsby Second Round Votes: Guilie, Michele, Elizabeth, Alex, Janie AND A Gal Needs
Total Count: Bruce Hornsby 10, Pam Tillis 2

At least the third round was a bit more even. Without checking the votes already placed, I was starting to wonder if there would be a turn-around. Awww, who was I kidding? I knew the battle was over.
Bruce Hornsby Third Round Votes: Debbie, FAE, Dolorah
Pam Tillis Third Round Votes: Birgit, Chrys, John
Total Count: Bruce Hornsby 13, Pam Tillis 5

The final round was another victory for Bruce. It seems it was a pretty uneven match-up. But, I was happy it wasn't a run-away. I debating throwing a vote for Pam, then I realized it was just going to be a sympathy vote and it really wouldn't have affected the outcome. I have to be honest to myself, and I voted for the winner this time.
Bruce Hornsby Final Round Votes: Stephen, Mary, Mike and myself.
Pam Tillis Final Round Votes: Cathy & Tammy.
Total Battle Count:
Bruce Hornsby: 17
Pam Tillis: 7

Winners Circle
Congratulations to Bruce Hornsby
Without further ado, Bruce Hornsby singing a song that sounds suspiciously like 'The Way It Is'.

Hilary Melton-Butcher –I prefer Bruce Hornsby's version ... just easier for me to listen to. Great song though.

Dixie@dcrelief - Super tough choice for me. I have always loved the Bruce version, but Pam Tillis puts it in another light! Tillis is a favorite - just as much as Bruce. I'm voting for her.

Alex J. Cavanaugh - Hate to say it, I have to go with Bruce on this one. It's fuller.

A GAL NEEDS - I like Bruce Hornsby and the Range. I grew up listening to that one!

Chrys Fey - They were both really good but I'm voting for Pam. I like how her version was softer, slower. And her voice was lovely, a perfect match for the lyrics.

John Holton - To me, everything Bruce Hornsby does sounds like "That's Just The Way It Is," regardless of who wrote it. Not that it was a bad song, but to make everything sound like it... uh, no.

Stephen T. McCarthy - Do you have that "one thing" that is a constant reminder?
Yes. It's a scar across the tip of my right ring finger from the night I fell down in a Prescott, Arizona, street with a big rock in my hand while filled with Grand Marnier and Tequila.

Mary Burris - Okay, this song takes me back to the 80's. I have the cassette. Listened to it frequently. My memory for this song is not romantic AT ALL. I was in my 20's, working for a beverage distributor. I remember walking between buildings at work. I had to walk past my bosses Volvo. Of course, I looked inside to see the interior and whatnot. To my surprise this Cassette was laying out in the open on the front seat. Boss earned some points in my book that day!

Tammy E. –My vote is for Pam Tillis, I never heard her version of this song before. I love her songs "Shake the sugar tree" and "Maybe it was Memphis".

Thanks to everyone who stopped by and placed a vote.
Come back again for a new battle December 15th.
Who will you vote for?
What song will I choose?
Which artists will battle it out?
Stay tuned.

  1. Your Battle and my Battle were both decided by 10-vote margins. Well, sometimes that's JUST THE WAY IT IS. They can't all be close contests.

Do you know if Pam Tillis is related to the famous Country singer (Something) Tillis? I can't recall his first name at the moment. He stuttered when he spoke, but not when he sang. (Waylon once told a hilarious story about Tillis to the audience at a concert I attended. Waylon was the best I ever saw in concert. Saw him 4 times and he was always so damned entertaining. Extremely funny stories in between all those Classic Country Outlaw songs.)

    2. Glad you did the research. I recall the singer whom you were referring to, though I wouldn't have remembered his name as I'm not big on country music.
Also, I noticed the 10 vote comparison too. Interesting.

    1. I think closer battles are more interesting, but when all the songs are enjoyed, then I consider that a success too.
      Thanks for listening and voting.

  3. I figured he would win.
    Will catch the next battle!

    1. Yea, I think it was fairly obvious. Still, I sometimes like to put a well known song against a lesser known version, just to see what happens.

    2. PS - Were you thinking of ranting on Monday?

  4. Jeffrey - I loved this battle even though my choice got crunched. My fvorite song of Pam's is called, "memphis." It's wroth the listen. Saw her with Willie Nelson about ten summers back - outdoor pavilion. They were the opening group (s) for "The Moody Blues." Imagine that combo!!

I saw Stephen's question about Mel Tillis...yep, that's her Dad.

Tough battle, but looks like we're in the same boat. Mine was 15 to 6.

I've got a possible of three choices for Dec. 15th. Still not sure which it will be. (smile).

    1. Tammy suggested a few songs on the actual battle post. Memphis was one of them. With two suggestions now, perhaps I shall have to check her out for sure.
Ohhhh, the Moody Blues. I like them.

  5. Oops, "Memphis" is *worth* a listen. Sorry about that.

  6. Hi, Jeffrey!

You surprised me, good buddy. I was sure you'd vote for Pam because you always seem to enjoy female vocalists. I'm glad that I and a handful of others prevented a shut-out. It was a great song selection and two worthy artists performing it. You can count on me to return for your December 15 battle. Enjoy the rest of your week, good buddy Jeffrey!

    1. But the one thing you are forgetting, good buddy, Pam is a country singer. I'm not very partial to country music. Even if I like the voice, I'm less likely to vote for her if she sings country.

  7. Poor Pam. I want that Steinway he's playing. You can have it delivered any day this week.

  9. Nice to be on the winning side, for a change. :) I'll be taking a break from blogging starting end of this week, so I'll catch up with you again in January. Happy Holidays to you and yours, Jeffrey!

  10. Sorry I missed your battle. My vote would have gone to Pam and I would have lost anyways. Very interesting battle! I liked it.

    1. Had a feeling you would go with Pam. Yes, we've missed you around here.
No, one vote would not have changed much, but if my other country music fan friend had stopped by, the vote would have been that much closer.

  11. Great BATTLE with the correct outcome, IMO. don't know if I said this in the voting or not, but I like country and I like Pam, but Bruce owns this one.

    1. I believe you did say that. I agree with the outcome too.

  12. Poor Pam! But for me, usually the 80s version is always going to win because that's the version I heard first. That includes songs from the 50s and 60s that were remade in the 80s.

    1. I agree with you. I'm pretty much the same way. I've noticed we seem to vote the same way in most cases.

  13. Not surprised with this outcome. Pam's version was just fine, but Bruce's version is iconic and in the end is just plain better.

  14. Interesting to see the results. I agree with Stephanie- and I tend to vote for the songs that are the versions I remember from growing up in the 80s. :)
